My Dad was one of the carpenters who built the roof and other woodwork at the Woolton store in the early 80s. I remember him being proud of that job, as the roof was quite technical. As it happens I was in there only last week for the first time in a good few years although, it being late December, I didn't catch a glimpse of Dad's handiwork. He was seven years younger than I am now (I'm 55) when the store opened. That's a sobering thought for the New Year!
The archive photos here are a snapshot of something of a "lost world" I think. The whole thing has an air of innocence and community that seems to have all but vanished now in Liverpool.
Although the early 80s was an era when times were pretty tough for most Liverpool people under Thatcher, sadly 40 years on we seem to have gone backwards in terms of social and demographic cohesion, not to mention financial security. 1982 now seems like a very long time ago indeed.
