Green cast metal bursting tester. The tester was used to measure bursting strength (a measure of resistance to rupture) in various materials. The test specimen would have been held in place by the central circular clamp while being subjected to an increasing pressure from the black rubber diaphragm below. The pressure would have been increased by turning the crank handle at one end of the tester while the pressure and bursting strength would have been monitored using the dial at the other end.
A plate screwed to the front of the tester gives the name and maker of the device, 'BURSTING TESTER No LT 1550 SERIAL No 6302 MADE BY H. E. MESSMERLTD LONDON ENGLAND'.
