Rectangular colourless panes of glass.
The panes would have been placed at the edge of the counters to protect the food displayed on the counters from customers. According to a local paper in Bedford these panes of glass had been suggested by John James Sainsbury who 'one day ... observed a customer's child, whose head was on a level with the counter, breathing on the bacon'.
