"Tools of the Trade" training video

Video from Sainsbury's Retail Training Department of a training programme for operational changes, in 1987/1988. There are two versions of the video on the same tape.

The video features Jeremy Grindle (Director of Branch Services) speaking of the importance of computers to Sainsbury's and was intended for any member of staff who required an appreciation of the methods and systems planned for 1987/88. Others interviewed on the video: Robin Whitbread (Departmental Director, Produce Buying); Trefor Hales (Manager, Branch Trading); Paul Blackman (Produce Manager at Thorley branch); Leslie Selby (Provisions Manager); David Mellows-Facer (Manager, Leeds branch); David Bridger (Deputy Manager, Thorley); Richard Wilkinson (Manager, Coldhams Lane); David Quarmby (board director); John Wilson (Operations Manager, Hoddesdon & Trident); John Pearson (Grocery Manager).

The first version of the video covers the four operational changes planned for 1987/88:
1. Branch data returns - new computer terminals in branches linked to Sainsbury's Blackfriars headquarters to input data to help with branch ordering and ensure that ordering can be done quicker so that suppliers can get orders prepared.
2. BOS 2 (Branch Ordering System 2) changes to help managers - single sheet of paper replacing C.A.R. and F.A.R. reports, information on weekly adjustable lines etc.
3. Shelf edge labels - new labels to be introduced following a trial at Leeds which incorporates both price and details on a single label and new design.
4. K/X line ordering and Release 12 system - simplification of ordering for non-perishable/slow moving lines; concentration of all slow-moving 'K lines' into Hoddesdon and Trident, and 'Van Gen(?)' depots; details of phasing in schedule and changeover; introduction of Release 12 of computer ordering system; changes at depots.

The second version of the video is shorter and includes an introduction and information on K/X line ordering, so could be shown to staff who only required information on those changes. The sections on K/X line ordering appears to be fairly similar between the two versions but some differences can be noted - for example John Pearson only appears in the second version.
