Reports and other papers relating to computer systems used in Sainsbury's branches - mainly scanning and EFTPOS systems. This includes internal reports and other papers from Sainsbury's about the introduction of scanning and EFTPOS to its stores, and documents relating to these systems in general such as Article Numbering Association papers.
Scanning systems are computerised checkout systems which scan barcodes on products to enable checkout staff to serve customers more efficiently. These can be linked to stock control systems enabling the system to see how many products have been sold and order additional stock when it is running low. The first computerised checkout systems at Sainsbury's were used in a trial at Broadfield, Crawley in 1979 - however initially barcode scanning was not used and checkout operators entered in a number manually. In the early 1980s further trials were carried out which included barcode scanning and during the period from 1985 to 1990 all Sainsbury's stores were converted to use scanning systems.
EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale), refers to the systems for the electronic transfer of money when customers pay with a credit or debit card. EFTPOS was introduced to Sainsbury's stores in October 1989 - initially only the Switch debit card was accepted by Sainsbury's, but from 1991 credit cards were also accepted.
