The store closed down on 6 October 1972. All the buildings in this picture were part of the Sainsbury's Blackfriars complex and were directly opposite the head office Stamford House. The road on the right is Rennie Street - the building that can be seen on that street (behind the closed shop) is Wakefield House (built by Sainsbury's as a warehouse in the late 1950s). This was the second 'Wakefield House' - the first (on the same site, it was demolished in 1956) was originally the Sainsbury's 'Kitchens' where pies, sausages and cooked meats were made from 1895 to 1936. The two storey frontage on Stamford Street left of the former shop also appears to have been part of Wakefield House. Soon after this picture this whole site (excluding Tress House, the four storey building on the far left of the picture, which was also occupied by Sainsbury's) was demolished. The third Wakefield House (a Sainsbury's office building) would then be built on the site opening in 1983.
