Caption written on back by Sainsbury's Archive staff: "The photograph shows the High Street soon after Sainsbury's came to Colchester. Next door were Kendall and Sons, umbrella and parasol makers, whose doorway was crowned with a cheerful sign which read 'Sun or rain'. Notice the huge scale of the lettering on Sainsbury's shopfront, with painted gold letters above a black glass sign with gilded lettering."
