The manager, Oswald Beaumont Carpenter, was my great grandfather. My mother's mother was born to the Carpenters in 1908 while Oswald was still manager at this shop. She died in 1999. She told me that one of her very earliest memories was of the lads from the shop. The family lived above the store, and it was expected that the manager's wife provided lunch for the staff. Grandma remembered playing with these young men at lunchtimes: "They taught me to walk and talk" she said.
