when I was aged 5 mum moved back to London after being evacuated during the war. The year was 1954. We moved into Goldsmith Buildings on the corner of Stukely Street and Drury Lane. I attended Macklin Street catholic school. I remember mum sending me to Sainsburys for 2oz ( ounces) of butter, i used to watch amazed by the shop assistant patting the butter into different sizes and weights, everything was loose and you could buy any measure of tea or sugar. The sugar was measured into a blue bag and expertly folded over to make the contents secure. Happy memories.
