Photograph showing various buildings and shops on Chapel Market (formerly Chapel Street), Islington, London. The shops shown on the photo (from right to left) are Achille Serre, Maypole Dairy Co. Ltd, Bata, Zains, A. Allwright, Lee's Hosiery Stores, Sainsbury's (48 Chapel Market), and Marks & Spencer. The Zains shop was a former Sainsbury's branch at 51 Chapel Market (then named Chapel Street) which closed in 1898. The Maypole Dairy Co Ltd building later became a temporary Sainsbury's branch (53 Chapel Market) open from 1962 to 1965. In the foreground the Achille Serre building was later demolished and with the street to the right of it (Northeast Place) became part of the site of Sainsbury's self-service store at 54-55 Chapel Market opened in 1965. The picture is a copy of a photo held at the M&S Company Archive (http://marksintime.marksandspencer.com). A reference 6998/281 is written on the back and a caption "1959 additional site acquired" (referring to Marks & Spencer's acquisition of the site).
