Photograph taken at the Sainsbury's branch at 33 Riverdale (now 33 Lewisham Centre), Lewisham, London. The photograph shows the hand-picked produce (fresh fruit and vegetables) display which was introduced at the branch in an experiment in 1976. Customers were able to select items themselves, put them in a bag, optionally could use the scales provided for customers to see how much it weighed, and then took it to a member of staff within the produce area who would seal, weigh, price and ticket the bag. This was different from the system used at some other supermarket chains at the time (later used by Sainsbury's, and which became standard in UK supermarkets) in which the items were weighed and priced at the checkout. Over the next few years self-selection fruit and vegetables displays were introduced at many more branches and it soon became a standard feature in Sainsbury's supermarkets. See JS Journal May 1976 for an article about the experiment.
