"1992 Senior Managers Meeting First Half" video

Video recording (unedited) of the first part of a speech by company chairman Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover (John Davan Sainsbury) during the 1992 Sainsbury’s Senior Managers' Meeting. The meeting was held at the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery.

He begins with an introduction and then discusses various topics including: the company’s financial results in detail; the performance of subsidiaries; the UK economy and recession; comparison with sales figures of competitors; sales figures for different product categories (eg petrol, produce); changes to products including examples of successful new products; areas which needed improvement and were performing unsatisfactorily; the company’s market share; price position; comparison with competitors including impact of "discounters".

A document called "the blue book" was circulated to the attendees with details of the company’s financial results.
