Between 1961 and 1964 Sainsbury's published Family, a quarterly publication which it claimed was 'the first store-to-customer magazine in this country'. This was replaced by a supplement, Sainsbury's Family Supplement in a new monthly magazine called Family Circle which was first published in October 1964. Although Family Circle was sold in other shops, the supplement was only available to Sainsbury's customers.
The supplement included recipes which always contained a few of Sainsbury's own brand products. From October 1965 until July 1966 these recipes ran under the slogan, 'Good food ideas from Sainsburys'. From August 1966 the recipes were called Sainsbury's Meal of the Month. The supplement also contained a few articles including, from December 1964, In Store for You by Sainsbury's Counterman, an article recommending products to readers which had featured in Family.
The supplement ran from October 1964 until August 1966 (although it continued to be advertised on the front cover of Family Circle as a supplement until September 1966) when it was reduced to Sainsbury's Meal of the Month and Instore for You at Sainsbury's (dropping the 'by Sainsbury's Counterman'). With occasional variations, these ran until December 1972. They were replaced by a photograph of a product on one page, such as lamb or cheese, and recipes featuring that product on the other. The recipes always contained a few of Sainsbury's own-brand products. By 1976 the recipes had been replaced by a single page advertisement for Sainsbury's own-brand products moving to a double page in 1979.
In 1983 the advertisements were replaced by Sainsbury's Circle, a supplement published exclusively for Sainsbury's customers. It featured articles on topics such kitchen utensils and nursery puddings. The supplement ceased in December 1986 and does not appear to have been replaced.
