The first such scheme was Sainsbury's Schoolbags in the 1995/96 school year. This scheme gave a paper voucher to a customer for every £10 spent in store or for every carrier bag re-used. This was replaced by Equipment for Schools in 1997 which was similar but did not include vouchers for carrier bag reuse. In 1998, it was replaced by the School Rewards scheme which used electronic points collected by customers using their Reward Card (Sainsbury's former loyalty card scheme) rather than paper vouchers. This reverted to using the Equipment for Schools name in 2000 though it continued to use electronic points collected through Reward Cards.
In 2005 a new scheme Active Kids was launched and this focussed on promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for children. Vouchers under this scheme can be spent by schools (the scheme was later extended to Scout and Guide groups and sports clubs) on sports equipment.
