In JS Journal March 1949, John Benjamin Sainsbury recalled their first "one single-horse van", about the time that Allcroft Road Depot was opened (c.1882). This cart was built by William Cobb (1837-1923) . He was descended from generations of Norfolk village wheelwrights and lived with his family at No. 1 Hanover Street, in Kentish Town, not far from the Sainsburys.
