Howard Bell worked for Sainsbury's from 1936 until 1940 serving mainly at 40 - 41 High Street, Colchester.
Includes essays by Howard Bell and letters between him and Bridget Williams, the Company Historian about his time with Sainsbury's, covering subjects such as his time as an egg boy, training, Sainsbury's during the Second World War, Easter eggs and Christmas poultry.
Also includes a newspaper article from the Essex County Standard about Howard Bell's experiences at Sainsbury's and a photograph of members of staff at 40 - 41 High Street, Colchester. The article led to a reunion of staff featured in the photograph which took place in 1997 at Sainsbury's store at Tollgate West, Stanway, Colchester.
Also includes copy of annotated instruction notes for cutting butter.
There is also a spatula with 'J.SAINSBURY' inscribed on it which was used to taste butter to make sure that it was fit to sell. The spatula was donated by Bill Steggles.
There are also copies of photographs of Howard Bell.
