John James Sainsbury
1844 June 12, born in Lambeth, one of four children of John Sainsbury (d 1863), a frame and ornament maker , and his wife Elizabeth nee Coombes (d 1902).
1858 Took his first job at the age of 14 in a grocer's shop in the New Cut at Lambeth, subsequently gaining experience with provision merchants and oil and colour merchants.
1869 Married Mary Ann Staples, whose father was a dairyman in Somers Town, North London. Opened their first shop at 173 Drury Lane.
1876 Moved to Queen's Crescent, Kentish Town.
1882 First suburban branch at Croydon. It was elaborately decorated, using marble, stained glass, teak, and patterned tiles, with a focus on cleanliness.
c1890 Adoption of the 'house style' of internal decor.
1891 Blackfriars (head office) leased.
1928 January 3rd John James dies.
