Educated at Haileybury, Herts
1921, 1 January, joined Sainsbury's aged 18, working behind the counter at the Boscombe branch, Bournemouth under the assumed name of 'Mr Alan.' Subsequently spent several months studying the dairy industry at Leeuwarden before becoming assistant to his uncles Arthur and Alfred Sainsbury.
1933 Became a director of J.Sainsbury Ltd.
1938 Became Joint General Manager, trading on the retirement of his father. (His brother Robert, became Joint General Manager, Personnel and Administration)
1939 - 45 During the Second World War he served as chief representative of the multiple grocers on the Government's many retail advisory committees. Also chaired two Ministry of Food import companies set up to control the import and distribution of poultry and rabbits.
1949 Visited the USA, returning convinced that the future of British food retailing was with self-service. As a result Sainsbury's converted its branch at 9/11 London Road Croydon to self-service in 1950.
1956 became Chairman of J.Sainsbury Ltd on the death of his father, John Benjamin Sainsbury.
1962 Created Baron Sainsbury of Drury Lane (Life Peer).
1967 Retired, becoming Life President.
1998 Died on 21 October.
