Ledger of transactions relating to rent, tax, utility and insurance payments by Sainsbury's on its properties. The ledger is in a double entry bookkeeping format with each debit entry on the left being balanced by the credit entries on the right.
The first half of the volume contains rents and rates for properties (mainly branches) payable on a quarterly basis. The name of the landlord and the annual rent is given for each property. For leased properties the date of the lease, term, and expiry date of the lease are given. The properties listed are mainly branches but also include some other premises such as railway arches at Gravel Lane and Sail Street. The properties are mainly in alphabetical order, but premises which were rented by landlords who owned multiple properties used by the company are often listed in a single account for each landlord (figures are however given for each individual property). Major landlords include J.J. Sainsbury, J.B. Sainsbury, and G. Sainsbury. There is also a 'depot rent account' which appears to concern rents charged by head office to branches for the usage of the branch premises.
The second half contains King's Taxes payments relating to properties, payments to utility companies, insurance companies (includes aircraft damage insurance), and local authorities (rate payments etc).
