Videos of interviews with Sainsbury's veterans (retired staff) which appear to have been recorded as part of a programme at the Sainsbury's Archives from about 1995 to 1998.
This was "a long-term programme...to build up an archive of footage of veterans' recollections" (source: correspondence in the archive's admininstrative files). Some interviews of current staff are also included but it is not clear whether this was for this particular project. The interviews were all carried out by Bridget Williams, company historian.
The interviews cannot strictly speaking be defined as oral history interviews as they are deliberately made for the purpose of being edited into a finished video or a television programme, rather than primarily as a way of recording people's memories as a historical record. The interviewees for instance are often asked to format their answers in a specific way so their comments could be edited in to a sound bite. The interviews also tend to be shorter and appear less concerned with details than an oral history recording. However, these interviews do still much information about the operation of the company and include interviews with people who had worked in various roles in the company including staff who served customers in counter and self-service stores, branch managers, and head office staff.
Many of the interviews were used in the "Quality perfect, Prices lower" company history video (see SA/HIS/5/1) and some may have been recorded specifically for that video.
