Photograph by Brian Shuel which is part of a set (SA/IMA/4/SO/40/1-32) showing staff working in Sainsbury's new laboratories at 115 Southwark Street, London which opened in 1968.
The picture was used in an article in 'JS Journal' (staff magazine) February/March 1969 pages 18-21. The picture shows a hand operating a Friden 130 Electronic Calculator. JS Journal explains that "Analytical procedures which could, twenty years ago [i.e. 1949], have taken several days can now be completed in minutes. Speed and accuracy call for fast calculation and the electronic calculator is used to save time in statistical analysis for both micro-biological and packaging problems and investigations".
