Series of three television commercials, two of which are early versions of 'Making Life Taste Better' television commercials and one which was possibly not used.
“Checkout” (45 seconds). The commercial depicts a mother, her son and Sainsbury’s employee at a Sainsbury’s checkout. The checkout display suggests the significance of the items purchased is more than it says on the label (eg a bottle of wine represents ‘laughter and friendship’). This advert was later completely re-made, although the basic concept was retained in the finished “Checkout” advert.
“Buyer” (35 seconds). This commercial depicts a wine buyer tasting wines in the cellar/tasting room of a wine producer. The wine represents “a little romance” and “a hint of the kids have gone to stay with the grandparents for the night”. This advert was possibly not used (no finished versions have been found).
“Friends” (50 seconds). Commercial featuring a boy going to school (it is implied it is his first day at school, is nervous and is having difficulty making friends). He offers a chocolate roll to a girl and they are shown to become friends. A caption reads “Friends 96p for six”. This is followed by the strapline “Sainsbury’s making life taste better” read by an out-of-vision announcer. The finished advert titled “Playground” is largely similar and uses the same video footage but edited down to 30 seconds, with a different voiceover, music and graphics.
