Photomatics of proposed television commercials for Sainsbury’s with slogan “Good food costs less at Sainsbury’s” and a “it costs nothing/no more to …” tagline.
Photomatics consist of photos edited into a sequence with voiceover/sound, to give an impression of an advertisement so that it could be assessed while avoiding the full costs of production (similar to an 'animatic' but using photos). No finished advertisements similar to these have been found in the archive, so it seems unlikely the adverts were completed and broadcast.
1. Advert featuring fresh lettuce still in the ground.
2. (00:37) Advert featuring fat being trimmed off a cut of meat, with reference to Jack Sprat.
3. (01:11) Advert featuring Sainsbury’s Graves wine, describing the grades from 1 to 9 that are applied to wines to rate their dryness/sweetness.
4. (01:59) Advert featuring three cabbages and the suggestion that Sainsbury’s quality and freshness have people believe their prices are high.
5. (02:39) Advert featuring a box of “Anything”, describing Sainsbury’s lack of advertising “bargain prices”.
