This bag design appeared towards the end of the BBC nuclear war drama “Threads” (1984, BBFC rating 15), where Jane (Ruth’s daughter) carried one while walking through the ruins of Buxton, 13 years after the nuclear war.
The bag appears to symbolise how far civilisation regressed in the film, from one of modern convenience (despite the challenges of the time), to one that looks like a cross between the Middle and Stone Ages, where people had to kill and steal to survive.
