One round ceramic jar with a removable lid in a white glaze used to hold blue stilton. It was based on a bloater paste jar. Bloater paste is a spread made from herrings which have first been salted and then smoked.
There is a black overglaze transfer printed design on the side containing an inscription, 'J. SAINSBURY'S QUALITY FOOD ESTABLISHED 1869'. The centre of the design contains a large 'S' surrounded by flowers, scrolls and banners. There is a small curved indentation in the lid. This may have allowed a spoon to be stored in the jar the handle protuding through the lid.
The bottom of the lid contains a label giving nutritional information and the use by date, '11 Jan '94'. According to the label, the jar could hold 227 grammes or 8 ounces of blue stilton.
