I remember very well the incident described above as 'electric shock for Rennie House'. I was working in the microbiology laboratory on the (I think) 4th floor when the fire alarm went off, only for it to stop a short while later. Some minutes later one of the maintenance men arrived in the labs and told us to evacuate as there was a fire in the electrical substation located in the basement of the building. As I understood it the fire alarm system was dependent on power from the substation which was why the alarm had stopped ringing! We evacuated and went to our muster station in Paris Gardens on the east side of the building. All of a sudden there was a loud, dull 'crump' and black smoke and dust shot out of the ground level vents at the base of the building. At this point we all took several steps away from the building! There was no prospect of returning to work for a while so I and some colleagues went round to the Rose And Crown in Meymott Street. Unfortunately the substation had taken out the power to the pub as well as Rennie House and it was in darkness, and the beer pumps had stopped working, so we made do with bottled beer. It was all quite exciting! Alec Gallagher (Microbiology Laboratories, SSD, 1976 - 1992). 31st December 2020.
