"Review of the Year" programme for Sainsbury’s (including all subsidiaries) staff. The programme shows highlights of a studio discussion recorded on 2 May 1996.
The programme is mostly in the style of a television debate programme with a studio audience formed of Sainsbury’s group staff who ask questions about various aspects of the company’s operation. A cross-section of staff from across the group participated in the programme. The chairman David Sainsbury and two other directors (Tom Vyner and Dino Adriano) answer questions. A presenter David Vickery chairs the discussion. Video reports are also included showing some highlights of the year 1995/96.

Includes expansion of own-label product range; "Customer First" scheme to improve customer service; "Helping Hand" scheme to help disabled customers; price promotions – Spring Bonus; "Schoolbags" promotion to provide school equipment; new stores; improvements to existing stores; new Haydock depot. Footage is included of store interiors; checkouts; Coffee Shop; counters; point of sale advertising; new features eg a pharmacy; and Haydock depot with lorry and driver.
4. Studio discussion – number of packers; regaining number one position from Tesco; training; promoting improvements to own-label products; discontinuation of lines; "Talkback" staff surveys.
5. Report showing highlights of the year for Homebase and Texas Homecare. Includes acquisition of Texas Homecare and conversion of three stores to Homebase (Longwell Green, Telford and Selly Oak); garden centre re-fits; new stores; the Homebase/Texas Spend ‘n’ Save loyalty card. Footage is included of Homebase and Texas store interiors and exteriors.
6. Studio discussion – conversion of Texas Homecare to Homebase; introduction of Homebase management structure to Texas stores; Tesco and B&Q linking up with a loyalty card initiative.
7. Report showing highlights of the year for Savacentre hypermarkets. Includes: two new stores (Sydenham and Stockton-on-Tees); increase in customers; refurbishment of existing stores; new departments in stores; advanced point of sale (checkout) system introduced at Calcot (Reading). Includes footage of store exterior; store interiors; new departments; checkouts at Calcot.
8. Studio discussion – five year plan for Savacentre; whether Savacentre will remain separate or be integrated more with Sainsbury’s.
9. Report on Shaw’s Supermarkets new Manchester, Connecticut store with a new format. Includes footage from the new store showing the new features introduced.
10. Studio discussion – question on whether the company should focus on regaining the market position of UK business instead of investing overseas.
11. Closing remarks by David Sainsbury and the presenter.
