Business television programmes was first introduced as a trial in 10 Sainsbury's stores in November 1995 to provide information for staff. It was launched with the "Retail Review Live" programme in which senior management including chairman David Sainsbury answered questions from staff, and was broadcast to stores by satellite. Business television was later launched company-wide in 1996. It was known under various names - Business Television, BTV, JS TV, and the "SMART" network (Sainsbury's Management and Retail Television).
A business television service called 'Tele-Tex' was also in operation in Texas Homecare which was part of Sainsbury's Homebase subsidiary. Surplus equipment from the 'Tele-Tex' service was used by the 10 stores for the November 1995 trial of Sainsbury's business television service.
