The photograph is featured in JS Journal February/March 1969 with the caption "About a mile from the centre of Bristol a new precinct is being built in the Bedminster shopping centre. It will lie behind the terrace of shops on the left of the picture. A new arterial road will run alongside it with a car park on its other side linked to the new development by a subway. JS [Sainsbury's] will have a new supermarket of nearly 9,000 square feet of sales area. Through the rain you can see on the right hand side of the road WD and HO Wills' Factory. The medieaval style structure in the right foreground is the local police station.". The photograph was taken on Bedminster Parade, and is actually some distance from where the store was built - the store was further away than the buildings in the background of the picture.

The crane in the centre of the picture is being used for the construction of the new Sainsbury's store - see SA/BRA/7/C/34/4/3. A tower block and a low rise block of flats can also be seen on the photograph. The photograph appears in 'JS Journal' February/March 1969 page 3.

Photograph showing the High Street in Colchester close to the Sainsbury's branch at 40-41 High Street. The branch is just out of shot, it would have been between the Red Lion Hotel (whose sign protrudes out on the left) and the Marks & Spencer store (which is the first building visible on the left). In the background, the 'Jumbo Water Tower' dominates the view. This appears to be part of a series of photos taken by Brian Shuel, circa 1969 in towns where new branches were to open (some of the other photos in that series appear in 'JS Journal' February/March 1969 page 4 to 17). See also SA/BRA/7/C/31/2/45.

In the article about the new laboratories at Blackfriars, the lady in the photograph at the bottom of page 19 is Maire Redford. I met Maire when I joined the JS SSD in December 1976 when she was running the microbiological media preparation laboratory. She was a lovely, warm-hearted lady who sadly passed away at a very young age. Her obituary appears in the JS Journal dated August 1984. (It mis-spells her name as Marie).
