Sainsbury's developed Savacentre in the model of French hypermarket stores. The enterprise began in collaboration with British Home Stores (BHS). Initially the company was known as Sabre Hypermarkets Limited but, due to trade mark problems, the name was changed to Savacentre on 12 April 1976. The first SavaCentre opened at Washington , Tyne & Wear in 1977. In 1989 Savacentre became a wholly owned subsidary of J Sainsbury plc.
