1930-1950 Shopping habits

Next

As a three-year-old, I remember my mother shopping in this store. I remember holding my mum's hand and walking through the crowds of legs. Two particular memories were the fact we would have to queue at each service point for different grocery items and, best of all, watching the assistant cutting butter off a large block, patting it into shape with wooden paddles and wrapping it in greaseproof paper.

My other standout memory was when my mother let go of my hand to pay for her shopping. Absentmindedly, I reached up to hold my mum's hand and, to my horror, found I was holding someone else's hand!
