My father, Ernest, spoke about working at this store on the cold meats department. He started as an assistant in an independent shop in Plympton, Devon. He subsequently moved to Watford. After the Great War, during which he served in the Cavalry, he went back to Plympton (where I was born) and became manager of International Stores where we lived over the shop. He later moved to Exeter because he became district supervisor of a number of shop some of them being "independent" but all supplied by Kearly & Tonge. He retired in 1953 and was presented with a bureau by his managers. He always spoke proudly of the training he received at Sainsbury's.
