I first worked at the depot as a statistical Quality controller across all departments doing weights and measure. My managers were Bob Crouden and John Hawkes. In 1981, I secured a promotion working as a quality control inspector for the bacon buying dept travelling all around looking at Bacon suppliers. I worked with Bill Clarke who was a short scotsman. As I was nearly 6ft tall he was known as my little man. Sadly he was killed in a car accident in 1984. The depot was on strike and we were sent all over the place to set up bacon packing across the UK to maintain supplies. Very sad time. I left in 1985 when I had my son and didn't return due to the amount of travelling involved. Wonderful Job.
Loved the lunchtime Xmas discos in the Griffin Social club on the last day before Christmas. I had my hen night at the Griffin Club too. Years later when I was working in Environmental Health department I returned to carry out food hygiene and health & Safety visits at the depot and to investigate accidents including the fatality in the warehouse.
