1960-1980 Stores

I was hired as a 17 year old 'Saturday Student' for the opening of the store. JS had set up a recruitment evening for students in the nearby South Woodford Library, and I went along. We were trained on checkout operation (Jo Hudson was checkout manager on opening) plus one other department; I was put onto Provisions (dairy; bacon; cooked meats). Store Mgr on opening was Terry Wigley (went on to become an Area Director); Mr King was Deputy (became a District Mgr). The store, which was oriented 90% differently to the current arrangement, was one of the highest-taking stores in the company within a year or two.
