Sainsbury Family; arts patron
The daughter of Simon Van den Bergh, a professor of philosophy at the University of Paris. Other members of her family ran a major margarine company.
In 1937 she married Robert James Sainsbury (later Sir Robert Sainsbury). The couple became well known as art collectors and patrons of the arts. In 1973 they donated their large art collection (of more than 400 works) to the University of East Anglia, where they commissioned the then-little known architect Norman Foster to design an art gallery. In 1979 the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts was opened.

Leaflet promoting the Perseverance Trust's home for elderly retired nurses at Howard House, Vicarage Way, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. The Hon. Secretary of the management committee is noted as Mrs R.J. Sainsbury [this is perhaps Lisa Sainsbury, wife of Robert James Sainsbury]. There is no reference to the Sainsbury's company in the leaflet. However as it was pasted in a Sainsbury's guardbook it seems likely that this leaflet was designed or printed by Sainsbury's on behalf of the trust.
